چکیده

Sarcoid skin tumors are the most common nodular skin tumors in the horse. They are typically nonmetastatic but can be locally aggressive and ulcerated. They may account for up to 90% of equine dermatological neoplasms. Approximately 40% of affected horses have more than one lesion and up to 50% of horses may have recurring lesions after surgical excision. Two of six subtypes of bovine papillomavirus (BPV) have been associated with the advent of sarcoid disease in the equine species. PCR techniques have found BPV genetic sequencing from both DNA and RNA in equine sarcoid tumors. Because of this bovine viral etiology, it is of no surprise to find that sarcoid syndrome is more prevalent in horses that work with or around the bovine species. Because of the wide prevalence of sarcoid disease (especially in working cow horses), the viral etiology, the subsequent possibility of insect vector enhancement, the difficulty in surgical excision, the inconvenient location of many of the lesions (underneath areas of tack application that may impede surgical healing), and the unsatisfactory response to medical treatment, the administration of an autologous implantation technique is advocated in this paper. 2. Extracellular matrix remodeling in equine sarcoid: an immunohistochemical and molecular study

BACKGROUND Equine sarcoids are locally invasive, fibroblastic benign skin tumors. Bovine papillomavirus type-1 (BPV-1) and/or Bovine papillomavirus type-2 (BPV-2) are believed to be the causative agent of sarcoids, although the mechanisms by which the virus induce the tumor are still poorly understood. We hypothesized that in genetically predisposed equines latent BPV infection may be reactivat...

Selection of a set of reliable reference genes for quantitative real-time PCR in normal equine skin and in equine sarcoids

BACKGROUND Real-time quantitative PCR can be a very powerful and accurate technique to examine gene transcription patterns in different biological conditions. One of the critical steps in comparing transcription profiles is accurate normalisation. In most of the studies published on real-time PCR in horses, normalisation occurred against only one reference gene, usually GAPDH or ACTB, without v...

Equine sarcoid: In situ demonstration of matrix metalloproteinase expression.

Sarcoids are the most prevalent equine skin tumours and remain a therapeutic challenge due to their differing clinical morphology, local aggressive behaviour, and high recurrence following surgical treatment. In vitro, sarcoid derived fibroblasts are invasive and express matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) -1, -2 and -9. It was hypothesised that the MMPs produced by neoplastic cells play a role in b...

Topical use of 5% acyclovir cream for the treatment of occult and verrucous equine sarcoids: a double-blinded placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND Previous studies mention the use of topical acyclovir for the treatment of equine sarcoids. Success rates vary and since the bovine papillomavirus (BPV) lacks the presence of a kinase necessary to activate acyclovir, there is no proof of its activity against equine sarcoids. RESULTS Twenty-four equine sarcoids were topically treated with acyclovir cream and 25 with a placebo. Both ...

O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase in equine sarcoids: molecular and epigenetic analysis

BACKGROUND Bovine papillomaviruses (BPVs) types 1 and 2 are the only known papillomaviruses able to jump the species. In fact, BPVs 1/2 induce neoplasia in their natural bovine host but infection is also associated to neoplastic skin lesions in equids termed sarcoids. The equine sarcoid is considered to be the most common equine cutaneous tumour worldwide for which no effective therapy is avail...
